The Yangtze River Dolphin (Baiji) is probably extinct. There hasn't been a confirmed sighting in many years. These evolutionary distinct cetaceans were not able to survive as their environment became extremely polluted with waste and toxins. They relied on their echolocation to find food, and the noise from heavy vessel traffic on the river made this impossible. Unsustainable and sometimes illegal fishing practices were also a major factor in their demise.
There are many other species in and around the Yangtze that are struggling, including the Finless Porpoise. Their numbers are reaching a critically low point, and help is needed immediately.
